You open Character.AI for a quick chat with a favorite character and get an ad before the first reply. Or the bot you spent weeks talking to suddenly forgets the name of your own story's villain. Or slow mode kicks in right when the scene gets good. None of these is a disaster on its own, but together they send a lot of people searching for "Character.AI alternative" at 1 a.m.
The trouble is that "alternative" means very different things depending on why you used Character.AI in the first place. Someone who wants a long-term AI companion needs a completely different app from someone who wants to argue philosophy with Socrates or run a fantasy campaign with friends. A list that ranks them all on one scale is not much help.
So this guide does it differently. First a quick look at where Character.AI stands in autumn 2026, then the alternatives grouped by what you want, with honest notes on who each one is not for. All product details were checked in October 2026; these apps change their plans often, so confirm prices in the app before you pay.
Where Character.AI stands in 2026
Character.AI is still one of the biggest platforms for chatting with user-made characters, and it keeps shipping features: voice calls, group chats, image generation and memory pins. It runs on its own in-house models, which you choose as "chat styles" rather than picking a model from OpenAI, Anthropic or Google.
A few changes over the last year explain why so many people are looking around:
- Under-18 users lost open-ended chat. Since late November 2025, teens get Stories and other guided formats instead, and the platform uses age estimation and selfie checks. Some adults report being wrongly flagged.
- Ads arrived in free chats. Mid-chat ads rolled out to free users in early 2026; the company says they fund the free tier.
- New paid tiers. Alongside c.ai+ at $9.99 a month, a cheaper "lite" plan at $4.99 a month launched in late September 2026 with fewer ads and less slow mode.
If you are happy with it, there is no reason to leave. If one of these changes bothers you, the right alternative depends on which one.
First, decide what you want
Before comparing apps, pick the sentence that sounds most like you:
- "I want a companion who remembers me." Look at companion apps built around memory and an ongoing relationship.
- "I want open, unfiltered roleplay with community bots." Look at large roleplay platforms with huge character libraries.
- "I want smart characters and better models." Look for apps that let you choose strong models such as GPT, Claude or Gemini, and characters that stay sharp in long conversations.
- "I want several characters talking to each other." Look for real group rooms where the characters react to one another, not just to you.
- "I want to learn or practice something." Look for historical figures, scenarios with goals and characters that push back.
- "I want full control and I don't mind tinkering." Look at open-source frontends where you bring your own model.
Keep your answer in mind as you read. Most disappointment with an alternative comes from picking an app built for a different sentence.

Smart characters and better models
Debatly
Full disclosure: this is our product, so read this entry with the same skepticism you would apply to any company describing itself.
Debatly started as an AI debate app and grew into a place to talk with AI characters that have a real point of view. The difference from Character.AI comes down to three things.
You choose the model. Characters run on frontier models: GPT-6, Claude Sonnet 5, Gemini and Grok on every plan, Claude Opus 5.5 on Pro, and GPT-6 Astra and Claude Fable 5.1 on Max. If one model writes a character too politely, switch to another and compare.
Characters talk to each other. In a group room, you invite up to 3 characters on Starter or 5 on Pro and Max. An AI director decides who speaks next, and the characters respond to each other as well as to you. Put Marcus Aurelius, Nietzsche and The Detective in one room and ask them what a good life is. It gets lively.
Conversations can go somewhere. Besides free chat there are scenarios with objectives (a salary negotiation, a job interview, a murder mystery) and structured debates where several AIs argue your question and Judge Alex delivers a verdict with reasoning.
There is also personal memory (100 facts on Starter, up to 10,000 on Max), a character builder with identity, goals, rules and a greeting, replies in whatever language you write in, an image generator, and no ads.
Not for you if: you want explicit roleplay, voice calls, or a free plan. Debatly is paid only (plans start at $19 a month) and has a curated library of a few dozen built-in characters plus the ones you build, not millions of community bots.
Try a three-way discussion before you decide anything:
Poe
Poe, from Quora, is a model aggregator first and a character app second. You get many models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others in one place, plus bots that users build on top of them. Since late 2025 it also supports group chats that mix people and AI models.
Plans are points based, from $4.99 a month up to $249.99 a month for heavy use. Expensive models burn points fast, which is the most common complaint.
Not for you if: you want immersive roleplay. Poe bots are mostly prompts on top of a model, without the persona tooling, memory or scene structure of a dedicated character app.
Companions who remember you
Replika
Replika is the original AI companion: one character, built over time into a friend, partner or confidant. It has memory, voice and video calls, an avatar and selfies. It does not do group chats or multiple characters, and you cannot choose the underlying model.
Paid tiers exist on top of a limited free version, and prices differ noticeably between app stores and regions, so check in the app. In May 2025 Italy's data protection authority fined the company 5 million euros, partly over weak age checks.
Not for you if: you want variety. Replika is about one relationship, not a cast of characters.
Nomi
Nomi is the companion app people usually mention when they complain about forgetful bots. It advertises short, medium and long term memory, and supports group chats with several of your Nomis, voice and image sharing. Its App Store listing shows plans from $9.99 a month, though in-app prices can differ.
Not for you if: you want community characters or model choice. Nomi is about companions you create yourself. In 2025 MIT Technology Review reported a case of a Nomi bot giving a user harmful instructions, and the company's response focused on not censoring its AI, which is worth knowing if moderation matters to you.
Kindroid
Kindroid is the most customizable of the companion apps. You can shape your "Kin" in detail, use layered memory, group chats, a shared "Rooms" feature with friends, voice and video calls. It offers a free trial and a subscription with optional add-ons; reviewers report different prices, so check the current offer.
Not for you if: you want quick, casual chats. Kindroid rewards people who enjoy configuring things, and the add-ons can make it pricier than it first looks.
Big community roleplay libraries
Janitor AI
Janitor AI is the closest thing to Character.AI's community vibe, with millions of user-made bots and a web-first design. It is 18+ only, with mature content behind a setting. You can use its free in-house model or connect your own API key.
The free tier is unlimited but has a short context window (about 9,000 tokens), so long stories forget things. Janitor+ adds five times the context and priority access. It does not offer group chats, voice or image generation.
Not for you if: you dislike setup and occasional downtime. Getting the best results often means managing your own API keys.
Chai
Chai is a mobile app with a big library of community bots running on Chai's own models. It is quick and casual. The free tier is usable, but longer replies now sit behind paid plans: Premium at $13.99 a month and Ultra at $29.99 a month according to the App Store.
Not for you if: you want depth. Reviews often complain about the paywall creeping into basic features.
PolyBuzz
PolyBuzz (formerly Poly.AI) has one of the largest character libraries out there, multi-character chats, an image generator and memory. It is free, with optional memberships and coins for extras.
Not for you if: ads and coin upsells annoy you. Parental safety sites also point out that the web version's age checks are weak, so it is not a good pick for a household with teens.
Learning and practice
Hello History
Hello History lets you chat with historical figures, and it has school programs and support for many languages. You get a small number of free messages before the paywall.
Not for you if: you want figures to interact or argue. Conversations are one on one, and historical accuracy depends on how you ask. If you want Einstein and Newton disagreeing about physics in the same room, a tool with group chat fits better. (We wrote more on using AI roleplay for learning and practice, and you can browse historical figures to chat with.)
Here is the kind of exchange a single-figure chat cannot give you:
Full control: SillyTavern
SillyTavern is free, open-source software you run on your own computer. You connect any backend you like (an OpenAI-compatible API, a local model, or a community network) and get multi-bot group chats, character cards, image generation and text to speech.
It costs nothing except what you pay your model provider, and it is endlessly configurable.
Not for you if: you want something that just works. Setup is technical, and quality depends entirely on the model you plug in.
How to test any alternative in 20 minutes
Feature tables only tell you so much. Run every candidate through the same quick test:
- The memory test. Tell a character three specific facts about you (a pet's name, a job, a goal). Chat about something else for 30 messages, then ask what it remembers.
- The pushback test. Say something mildly wrong with confidence. A good character either corrects you or argues back in its own voice. A weak one agrees.
- The drift test. Give a character a strong personality, like a grumpy pirate captain. By message 40, is it still grumpy, or has it turned into a polite assistant in a costume?
- The group test. If the app has group chat, add three characters and stay quiet for two turns. Do they react to each other, or do they take turns monologuing at you?
- The price test. Use it for a full evening the way you normally would and see when you hit a limit, a slow mode or an upsell.
The app that passes the tests you care about is your alternative, whatever any ranking says, including this one.
Our honest take
- For a companion that remembers you, Nomi or Kindroid.
- For the community roleplay vibe of Character.AI, Janitor AI.
- For many models in one subscription, Poe.
- For total control, SillyTavern.
- For sharp characters on the best models, rooms where characters argue with each other, and conversations that end in a decision, Debatly.
If that last one sounds like you, start with the AI characters page or jump straight into a group room. For a side by side look at just the two of us, read Character.AI vs Debatly. Plans and limits are on the pricing page.
